Hotel Vincci Gala Barcelona by TBI Architecture & Engineering
In the heart of Barcelona, a hotel inspired by the genius of Salvador Dalì and his muse, enriched with the elegance of intense contrasts and improved dark colours thanks to DeepColour™ Technology* by DuPont
The architectural studio TBI of Barcelona, run by architect Miguel Jordá, is one of the first to have used the innovative DeepColour™ Technology* developed by DuPont that allows production of the dark colours of DuPont™ Corian® with improved performance, reliability, durability and hygiene, along with functionality, elegance and design. One of the new black tones of DuPont™ Corian®, the Deep Nocturne colour, has been used to create a dramatic bar at Hotel Vincci Gala located in Barcelona’s Eixample district. Gregor Mertens, the architect and design coordinator of this four star, 80-room hotel, explains why he chose to use this new DeepColour™ technology* for the design, “We have worked with DuPont™ Corian® to achieve a continuous, organic form, which contrasts and fits in perfectly with the rectangular golden box/frame depicted by the bar.” Mertens also highlights the importance of the lack of seams, joints and off-white lines between the sections, adding that, “The new technology and the Deep Nocturne colour of DuPont™ Corian® have allowed us to achieve this and also to bring about the contrast we were looking to create with the gold, which can also be seen around the rest of the building.”
Contrast: the leitmotif of this design project
Contrast (between colours, textures, sensations and periods) is the backbone of this project at the Hotel Vincci Gala, whose name was chosen by popular vote and refers to Dalí’s muse and companion. “This is a palace from the year 1900. Its old facade had to be preserved, as well as the grand white marble staircase on show inside.” explains Mertens. The three-storey design, which harks back to the building’s historical origins, consists of a curtain wall on the exterior, fronted by a curtain that has the appearance of an ironed gold mesh. According to the architect, “this creates a new, modern, dynamic facade, which incorporates openings and contrasts with the old façade.” The idea of showing and emphasising the continuous play on contrasts to be seen around the entire hotel emerged, in part, from the name given to the establishment itself. The relationship between Gala and Dalí – an unlikely, extravagant and surreal pair – was key to the idea behind the project. Mertens explains how this theme plays out in the design, “We have worked so much with black and gold, lights and darks in the interior… The aim is to give the space an extravagant and elegant touch, just like the great painter himself did.” Taking this approach, and using DuPont™ Corian® in Deep Nocturne, the TBI studio has managed to capture the perfect fusion of ancient and modern, elegant and informal in the hotel bar. The design also had to be practical. Mertens says, “This is a surface that must also be able to cope with all kinds of liquids and stains and constant activity, which, in addition to its appearance and design, is why we have opted for DuPont™ Corian®.”
